Kid (0-2 months)

Kids should be kept in a warm, dry environment to prevent diseases.

Colostrum is important for newborn kids. Colostrum must be mixed and heated properly (it cannot be given cold). If the kid’s mouth is cold and they are not drinking the colostrum through a bottle, the farmer will need to tube the goat, making sure it is putting the tuber on the left side.

If the farm is Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Virus (CAE) positive, the kid should not drink from the mother and a milk replacer should instead be used. Our stores stock the following milk replacers:

Serval KidO milk replacer is an all milk protein milk replacer designed for optimum growth and
development of kid goats as herd replacements or meat production.

Grober KidGro milk replacer optimizes energy and protein density to meet specific nutrient requirements of young growing kids. KidGro milk replacer makes an excellent fit for automatic milk feeders to provide small, multiple nutrient dense meals for ease of digestion.

Mapleview Kid Start is a highly digestible milk replacer formulated using the most recent scientific information and designed for optimal growth of young kid goats.

At this stage, scours can be common but easily controlled by giving the kids scour halt. Kids are also prone to get Caseous Lymphadenitis (CL) which look like abscesses, but are fluid-filled.

Growth stage (2-12 months) and adult (1 year+)

Adult goats are hardy and can live on uneven/rocky terrain. They enjoy a free area as they tend to be very active animals; however, they should have shade in the summer and a dry, draft free barn in the winter.
